Siscodata has introduced an automated pilot line for processing prismatic cells, focused on wrapping, cleaning, and dielectric insulation, designed to meet U.S. market requirements and IRA standards. The technology ensures high precision in insulation—which is essential for optimizing energy density and safety in the e-bike market—while enabling rapid format changes and compliance with UL/CSA standards for Gigafactories.

The line was designed to meet the stringent regulations of the U.S. market (IRA and UL) and to ensure high energy density in the e-mobility sector [2]. The system incorporates advanced machine vision control capable of detecting air bubbles and micro-creases on the insulating film in real time, ensuring the quality of the final product and enabling rapid format changes

TESA film:
85µm (50 backing + 35 glue) thicker film is possible up to 220µm.
As per drawing the PET film is
• MED009657_A01 M21: 112mm length 960,9 ±1mm
• MED009683_A01 M26: 110mm width and length 1363,0
±1mm
Note: the roll film must be provided without splice jointure.Siscodata has an extra cost automatic device module to avoid also this problem (see post coming soon).
Film roll:
size and dimensions:
• pass width: from min. 105 mm up to max. 120 mm.
• external diameter: 320 mm max.
• internal diameter: 75 mm
• bobbin absolute maximum weight: 12 Kg
Film cut device:  rotating blade or laser 450 nm option
MICA:
specifications to be defined in a further stage, but we foresee:
• picking technology: Vacuum venturi generator;
• loaded manually on a silos stack: max height 500 mm.
• only one glued surface cover by liner
• red peeling label: the position of the red label must be defined
with Siscodata in a further project step and can have only
±2mm position error.
Precision of application: position on module bottom as follow:
• Film: ±1mm
• Mica: ±1mm
This error will be added up to the previous errors of the geometry of
the module received.
Bubble / Wrinkle:
under PET film. It will depend on the battery surface and the
alignment between battery and under module (for example “PAD not
in position”: in case a compressing PAD is not in the correct position,
then the bottom lamination will lead to a consequential error).
Cycle time:
72 seconds/module max. time cycle.
Note: in the area will be 2-3 modules in process at the same time

Process:

1. Robot1 picks a module and drops it on the underwrapping unit position, with

bottom part exposed. Robot gripper and Underwrapping-Gripper must be

compatible among themselves: so, Siscodata will share specifications to Kuka in

a further project stage in order to design such gripper.

2. Underwrapping unit moves the module on an X-Y axis.

3. Before lamination, we suggest cleaning the surface with “Air Taifun” system and

air aspirator (see “Option CLEAN”)

4. Film lamination will be done as per Pict. 5. Length of film will be fixed (not adapted

to module size).

5. OPTIONAL CAMERA (extra cost not included): Keyence linear camera (same system as cell    wrapping) can check the film adhesion just after lamination.

6. Then Robot2 picks the module and brings it to MICA application station.

7. Here a de-stacking and pealing unit exposes a single MICA plate with exposed glue.

8. An application tampon sticks the MICA layer to the bottom center part of the module.

9. Robot1 picks again the module and passes it on the Camera checking station

(more info on actual camera is needed).

10. Robot1 drops the module again on the input line.

Siscodata, leader in the global automotive supply chain and high-value manufacturing, has chosen COMAU/ABB as a supplier of autonomous mobile robots and the COMAU/FANUC pair for collaborative robots (cobots) in order to evolve its production and internal logistics processes through automation, creating an environment where operators and machines work in harmony while achieving new goals of digitalization and sustainability.

Operating in the FOOD - GDO field (large retail and supermarket), Siscodata has now entered the automotive electrification field for the winding part of prismatic cells by transmigrating its technologies and know-how to this rapidly expanding field.

The new series of machines produced for major industrial groups in the automotive field is mainly aimed at packaging and film wrapping of prismatic cells.

The lithium cells, before being put into the battery to create the assembly to be inserted into the electric car, must be covered with insulating film and an EVA foam pad must be applied between each cell.

The 50-micron PE film on liner backing is peeled and the cell is passed through the stretched film with 2 soft rollers that apply the film without wrinkles and fold it over the corners. An optional final station with 6 high-resolution chambers and dedicated algorithms, plus LED flash illuminators, creates the final control for rejecting cells with bubbles or wrinkles.

The machine has an adhesive film unwinder on silicon paper liner from reel with slitter tensioner.

An extra-cost option allows the 15-kg film reel to be changed in very few minutes, while in the standard case, the changeover time takes 20 to 30 minutes max.

The accepted tolerance on part linearity is +/-0.1 mm on all three dimensions (length/width/height) of the cell.

Productivity is limited to 6 pieces per minute, while input and output loading is provided by 2 small robots.
